Leading Australian trainer Gai Waterhouse has finally secured her place in the Melbourne Cup Hall of Fame after race favourite Fiorente held his nerve to claim the 2013 Melbourne Cup in impressive fashion.

Fiorente claimed outright favouritism at Paddy Power Paddy Power last week following the withdrawal of early pick Puissance De Lune and managed to hold off a spirited challenge from Northern Hemisphere hopefuls Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos to claim the AU$6 million dollar event and instill Waterhouse as the first female trainer to prepare a winner in the famous race.

“It was quite a solidly run race and he just kept tracking up” Waterhouse ecstatically said immediately after the race.

“It’s a dream come true. I’m just so thrilled for everyone. Isn’t it nice to have a favourite that can do that”.

Renowned jockey Damien Oliver replaced previous rider Nash Rawiller only two week ago; proving to be a masterstroke as Oliver claimed his third victory in the Race that Stops a Nation after success with Doriemus (1995) and Media Puzzle (2002).

“It was amazing” Oliver said while still aboard the Monson stallion after the race.

“It’s a bit like having a Christmas present and not being able to open it. I’ve been really excited about this horse.

“I’m wrapped I could be a part of Gai’s first one. She’s done so much for racing and it’s a great honor for me.

“It’s a dream come true … It’s really hard to believe”.

With the victory, Fiorente became the first horse since Brew (2000) to have followed an unsuccessful run in the previous year’s Melbourne Cup  with a victory in the world’s most prestigious two-mile handicap.

Selecting the same Barrier as 2012 Champion Green Moon, all signs pointed to a successful day for the Waterhouse camp; made even more apparent by the perfect position claimed by Oliver when the stalls first opened.

“I just let the pace go and let him be happy” Oliver said.

“He moved into the race beautifully on the turn and it was just a matter of holding him off and he was too strong”.

2011 runner-up Red Cadeaux was barely given a chance by punters for the 2013 Melbourne Cup at Paddy Power Paddy Power, however the French invader defied critics when taking the lead midway up the final straight, just beaten to the line by Fiorente.

Luca Cumani-trained Mount Athos eased in betting in the hours leading up to the Cup and was only just off the pace at the completion of two miles.

The Melbourne Cup attracts the attention of Millions of punters around the World each year, the majority of whom cleaned up nicely following the race’s 2013 edition.
